Stage 1 – Prevention Plus

The goal of Prevention Plus is to foster development of a healthful lifestyle based on the family’s readiness to change. The goal is weight maintenance with growth that results in decreasing BMI as age increases. Monthly follow-up assessments should be performed.

  • 5 or more fruits/vegetables
  • Less than 2 hours of screen time each day
  • No TV in sleeping area
  • At least one hour of physical activity
  • No sugar sweetened beverages
  • Eat breakfast daily
  • Limit fast food to 1 time a week

Stage 2 – Structured Weight Management

This stage targets the same behaviors as Prevention Plus and offers additional support and structure to help the child achieve healthy behaviors. The goal should be weight maintenance that results in decreasing BMI as age and height increase. Depending upon medical situation, a weight loss program may be indicated. Bi-monthly or monthly follow-up assessments are recommended for most patients in this stage of treatment.

  • Develop a structured daily meal plan with the assistance of a nutritionist
  • Log of exercise, TV time and daily diet.
  • Less than 1 hour of screen time each day
  • No TV in sleeping area
  • At least one hour of physical activity
  • No sugar sweetened beverages
  • Eat breakfast daily
  • Limit fast food to 1 time a week
