Deciding to breastfeed your baby is the greatest gift you can give your child by providing the best possible start in life. Breastfeeding benefits you and your baby in many ways including mother-baby bonding, perfect nutrition, cost-savings and health benefits for you and your little one. It is a choice made by most new mothers but it can be a challenge. Breastfeeding is a natural process but it does not always come naturally. As a result, some new mothers have trouble getting started. Breastfeeding is a learned skill and like any new skill, it requires patience and practice.
At Potomac Pediatrics, we believe that it is important to offer all of the support and encouragement you need to successfully breastfeed your baby for as long as you wish. We accomplish this by getting things started off right. When you come into our office for your newborn visit you will first meet with our board-certified lactation consultant who will take a history, answer questions, offer advice and help formulate a breastfeeding plan that works for each mother-baby pair. The appointment will finish up with one of our pediatric practitioners who will examine your baby and address any other concerns you have.

We continue to support breastfeeding mothers by offering the services of our on-site, board-certified lactation consultants who are skilled at assisting new mothers with:

  • poor infant weight gain

Consultation Fees:
Initial Comprehensive Consultation (60 minutes): $125.00
Follow-up Consultation 30-minutes: $50.00

Payment is due at the time of service. We do not bill your insurance for lactation consultations unless paired with your initial 2-day visit or a weight check. Lactation consultations paired with a physician visit are 30 minutes. Failure to arrive on time will result in a reduced visit with the lactation consultant.

Please be advised, if you need to cancel or reschedule your scheduled appointment, we ask that you provide us with a 24-hour notice or you will be subject to a $50.00 late cancellation fee.

Prepare for your private consultation:

Feed your baby (but not too much!):
In order to work together through a full feeding, your baby should come ready to eat. It can be a bit of a “Goldilocks” situation. You do not want your baby to be too hungry because a stressed out baby who has been crying might not have the energy or the patience to feed well but a baby who is too full will not be interested in feeding during the consult. To achieve the “just right” situation you should offer your baby a substantial feeding for at least an hour and a half to two hours before our consultation.

Feed yourself:
Make sure you eat a good meal before your meeting with the lactation consultant. This will help you feel your best and allow you to retain more information.

Bring Back-up:
It is often helpful to have a support person present so you can learn together. This person can help you remember information discussed during the appointment.

Bring Any Breastfeeding Accessories:

Your breasts and the baby are the only essentials but if you are using any breastfeeding tools: a special pillow, nipple shield, etc. bring those along as well. We have additional supplies in our office if needed.

Lactation Testimonials:

I met with Maureen a few days after being discharged from the hospital with my first born. Maureen was supportive, encouraging, and nonjudgmental. She answered all of my questions and encouraged me to reach out to her if I had any questions after our appointment. I very highly recommend her!
